It is not outrageous to suggest that Dan and RJ Gottlieb's 1969 Camaro, nicknamed "Big Red," is the most famous musclecar of all time. Built in 1987 to hunt exotic European scalps in open road racing competitions, Big Red went through several iterations of development, the most famous being the second-generation car which featured full tube-frame construction and a 540-cubic inch Donovan race engine. Between 1988 and 1990, Big Red utterly decimated all competition at open road races such as the La Carrera Panamericana and the Silver State Classic, setting numerous records as well as establishing the template for what would come to be known as "Pro-Touring" musclecars, cars that blend straight-line speed with fine handling capabilities.
GMP's new 1:18-scale diecast replica of the legendary Big Red Camaro is a long-awaited entry into the world of scale model musclecars, and the results do not disappoint. Engine and interior detail are excellent, as are the cars wide racing rims and tires. The long-awaited Big Red Camaro by GMP is a significant entry into the scale model musclecar market, and serious Chevy fans should not hesitate to secure their copy.
