The introduction of the FIA's Class 1 Touring Cars formula for 1993 presented a ripe opportunity for carmakers to push technology to the limit. With few restrictions beyond a 2.5-liter, normally aspirated engine formula, constructors were free to experiment with anti-lock brake and traction control systems, as well as wild aerodynamic components. Having won back-to-back DTM championships in 1990 and 1991, and with a decade of all-wheel-drive know-how under their belt, Audi's new 80 quattro 2.5 should have been a dominant contender in the 1993 season...but when the FIA announced a weight penalty system to try to level the touring car playing field, Audi withdrew from the series before the car could turn a wheel in anger.
Spark Models' history of producing 1:43-scale models of obscure race cars has yielded an absolutely beautiful miniature replica of the stillborn Audi 80 quattro 2.5 DTM prototype. Finished in the familiar silver-and-red Audi race livery, the model captures all of the wild aerodynamic flares, vented race wheels, and spartan cockpit that should have made the car a sure winner on the track. Audi enthusiasts and fans of historic DTM racing should not hesitate to add this intriguing hint at what might have been to their collections.
