The rain-soaked 1960 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans would mark a return to winning form for Scuderia Ferrari, but for American fans, it was equally significant for the Le Mans debut of the Chevrolet Corvette. Under the supervision of legendary sportsman Briggs Cunningham, three hardtop-clad, 283-powered C1 Corvettes would take to the Sarthe Circuit in the 5-liter GT category (a fourth car was entered by the Camoradi Race Team) wearing Cunningham's traditional white/blue stripe livery. After 24 grueling hours of competition, the #3 Corvette driven by John Fitch and Bob Grossman would claim victory in class, with a highly credible 8th place overall finish, thereby laying a foundation for future Corvette glory in the French endurance classic.
