An automotive analog to the great Tour de France bicycle race, the Tour de France Automobile sent cars and drivers across the length and breadth of France (and beyond) with long-distance transit stages punctuated by competitive special stages on race and hillclimb circuits. By the mid 1970s, the Tour had morphed into a component of the European Rally Championship, so it should come as no surprise that the most successful rally cars of the era would come to dominate this legacy event. Such was the case of for the Lancia Stratos HF, a car that would claim five overall Tour de France victories between 1973 and 1980. Four of these wins would come courtesy of the French team of driver Bernard Darniche and navigator Alain Mahe, whose mastery of the event is celebrated in this highly accurate 1:43-scale resin replica of their 1977 Tour-winning Stratos. Beautifully finished in the French Blue livery of sponsor Total Chardonnet, it includes fine details such as bold race wheels, fully realized cockpit, and a prominent radio aerial. A refreshing change from the seemingly endless stream of Alitalia-liveried Lancias, the Darniche/Mahe Stratos by Spark merits consideration for serious collectors of historic rally cars.
