The 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans was a titanic battle among the heavyweights of the LMGT1 category: Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan, who all brought the expected collection of mid-engined contenders. And then, there was Don Panoz and his defiantly different Esperante GTR-1. Developed in partnership with Reynard and powered by a Roush-built 6-liter V8, the Esperante's front-mid engine placement gave the car a unique "Batmobile" look...and on paper, little chance of success against the big-budget monsters from Europe and Japan. And though the big guys did dominate the race (with Porsche taking the overall win) the underdog Panoz went the distance, claiming a highly credible 7th-place finish in the hands of aces David Brabham, Andy Wallace and Jamie Davies. Sorely underrepresented in the scale-model car world for too long, the beloved #45 Panoz Esperante GTR-1 is now available in 1:43-scale resin by Spark. Its luminous silver finish is accented by its Visteon livery and brilliant race wheels. Its curvaceous body, sharp aerodynamic bits and race cockpit are executed to perfection.
