Porsche 356 1600 Super Speedster (1955 James Dean) - 1:18 Scale Diecast Model Car
Few cars are linked as closely to an individual as is the Porsche 550 Spyder with Hollywood legend James Dean, but before the actor met his fate in that notorious silver race car, he made his mark in the motoring world in another Porsche. Using his newfound fortune after the filming of East of Eden to indulge his passion for racing, Dean acquired a new Porsche 356 Super Speedster in March, 1955 from John von Neumann's Competition Motors and immediately set to work honing his racecraft on L.A.'s sinuous Mulholland Drive. After logging over 1000 break-in miles, Dean entered the Palm Springs Road Races - his first ever - on March 26th, and promptly won the under-1500 cc class while claiming third place overall. A month later, Dean scored another class win in the Speedster at Bakersfield. The car's third race appearance was at Santa Barbara, where it retired from fourth place with a blown engine. For his next planned race at Salinas in September, 1955, the actor-turned-racer would trade his Speedster on a potent 550 Spyder, but as is known to nearly every human who has ever heard the words "James Dean," he would never make it to the starting line.
James Dean's first Porsche, the 356 Super Speedster, is the subject of a beautiful 1:18-scale diecast replica by AUTOart. It features a fully detailed cockpit and engine compartment, revealing the spartan charm of the classic Porsche Speedster that helped turn Dean into Hollywood's first "gentleman racer." Of special note are the body-colored road wheels that complete the Speedster's unmistakably '50s sports-racer aesthetic.
