During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Porsche had nibbled at the fringes of Formula 1 with derivatives of their 718 F2 racer. In 1962, however, Porsche developed an audacious F1 racer intended to challenge the best the had to offer: the 804. Powered by an air-cooled, 1.5-liter flat eight, the 804 featured advancements such as the first standard disc brakes and rack-and-pinion steering to be found on a Porsche. The 804's true potential was never realized, however, as a series of crashes and a lack of reliability meant that positive race results were few...except for one glorious moment at the 1962 French Grand Prix at Rouen-Les Essarts, when Dan Gurney outlasted the dominant Lotuses and BRMs to claim Porsche's first-ever Formula 1 victory. Porsche withdrew from F1 at the end of the season, meaning Gurney's win would also be the marque's last as a constructor.
The incredibly significant Porsche 804 has been recreated by the master modellers at AUTOart in a magnificent 1:18-scale diecast metal replica. It features an exquisitely detailed engine and gearbox, as well as a faithfully rendered cockpit and accurate wheels and tires. The AUTOart 1:18-scale Porsche 804 is an essential addition for collections of historic Porsche models and vintage F1 cars alike.
