The 1970 running of the 12 Hours of Sebring ranks as one of the most exciting sports car races of all time. Held during the heyday of 5-liter prototypes, the grueling Florida endurance race was expected to be a titanic fight between the mighty Porsche 917K and Ferrari 512S. Instead, it would become a battle of attrition, as the factory-entered 917s and all but one of the 512s dropped out of contention for the win with mechanical issues. Carving through the carnage was a privately entered, year-old Porsche 908/2 Spyder, driven by up-and-coming American racer Peter Revson and a part-time racer by the name of Steve McQueen. The latter, one of Hollywood's biggest film stars, sought to establish his bona fides as a serious race driver with his Sebring appearance, going as far as driving with his leg in a cast following a motorcycle accident. Through steady running and a bit of luck, the McQueen/Revson 908 came within one lap of scoring an overall victory at Sebring, losing out to Mario Andretti's Ferrari 512S on a last-corner pass. Consolation for McQueen and Revson was a 3-liter class victory, and the knowledge that their underfunded privateer effort had very nearly taken down the Big Guys of the World Sportscar Championship.
