Porsche AG's penchant for pushing FIA rules to their breaking point has resulted in some of history's greatest sports racing cars, including such hallowed models as the 917 and 936. With the advent of the GT1 category in the 1990s, Porsche once again saw an opportunity to create a dominant race car under the thinnest disguise of street legality. The result of their efforts was the 911 GT1, a purpose-built racing machine that had more in common with the outgoing 962 Group C car than the 993-generation 911 on which it was ostensibly based. The first GT1 constructed was a carbonfiber-bodied test mule, which would undergo a strenuous 27-hour endurance run ahead of serial production of the model. Finished in Mobil 1 and Warsteiner livery, the GT1 test mule is a perfect snapshot of glorious era in international GT racing.
Spark's new 1:43-scale resin replica of the Porsche 911 GT1 test mule is a welcome addition to the world of scale model Porsche race cars. Presented accurately in simulated carbonfiber, it features Spark's usual level of exceptional detail. Interior components and aerodynamic bits are excellent, as are the car's wide BBS race wheels. Collectors of historic Porsche race cars should not hesitate to add this intriguing model of a significant prototype to their miniature garages.
