Porsche 911R (1967) - 1:18 Scale Model Car
Seeing their new 911 as a potentially dominant competitor in international GT racing, Porsche began work on a lightweight homologation special in 1967. Dubbed the 911R, this new variant kept the basic 911's steel unibody but replaced nearly every other component on the car, from lightweight fiberglass body panels to the potent 901/22 flat six found in the company's successful 906 race cars. The result was an 800 kilogram, 210 horsepower rocket, the lightest and most powerful 911 yet constructed. Porsche attempted to have the 911R homologated for GT competition as nothing more than a variant of the 911S, but the FIA rejected this frankly silly notion, and with a production run of 500 cars required for homologation, Porsche shelved the 911R project with only 23 examples completed. Though somewhat of a race car in search of a place to race, the 911R did enjoy a few noteworthy accomplishments on track; the very first 911R would break five long-distance speed records over a 48-hour period at Monza in October 1967.
This record-setting 911R is now the subject of an exquisitely crafted 1:18-scale model by Amalgam Collection. Relying on sophisticated digital scanning and a trove of historical information supplied by Porsche, the Amalgam 911R captures every subtle nuance of this important milestone in 911 history.
