The punishing 1978 Safari Rally saw only thirteen finishers from a starting field of over 80 cars. Scoring a fine second-place finish was the new 3-liter Porsche 911SC of local Kenyan heroes Vic Preston, Jr. and John Lyall, a strong result that pointed the way towards Porsche's future rally efforts in the 1980s. The Safari Rally 911SC is now the subject of a highly detailed 1:43-scale resin replica by Spark.
