As wild to handle as it was to look at, Porsche's factory-entered, Martini-sponsored 917LH was a 240 mile-per-hour Mulsanne missile when it appeared at the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans. Driven by Willi Kauhsen and Gerard Larrousse, the tricky-handling "langheck" 917 became borderline uncontrollable under the race's wet conditions. Nonetheless, the prodigious straight-line speed of the longtail 917, coupled with Kauhsen and Larrousse's skill and bravery, saw the psychedelic wondercar persevere to an unlikely 2nd-place overall finish in one of the most memorable Le Mans 24 Hour races of all time.
The beloved Porsche 917LH "Hippie" is now the subject of a brilliant 1:43-scale resin replica by the master modellers at Spark. The car's intricate psychedelic paint scheme has been captured to perfection, as have the car's wide race wheels and tires and Martini sponsorship decals. An unmissable addition to collections of significant Le Mans racing models, the Spark Hippie 917 is one of the most exciting 1:43-scale cars to come along in recent memory.
