Historical Background: From Unloved Afterthought to Cult Classic
Few automobiles have had a greater impact on BMW's image than the BMW 507 Roadster. Introduced in 1955 and designed by renowned industrial designer Albrecht Graf von Goertz, the 507 was conceived as a luxurious, high-performance sports car intended to elevate BMW's profile in the growing American market.
Powered by a lightweight aluminum 3.2-liter V8 engine producing approximately 150 horsepower, the 507 combined refined grand touring comfort with impressive performance for its era. Its breathtaking styling, characterized by flowing fenders, a long hood, and the now-famous twin-kidney grille, established design themes that continue to influence BMW sports cars today.
Despite widespread acclaim, the 507's hand-built construction made it extremely expensive to manufacture. As production costs escalated, the car's selling price nearly doubled from BMW's original target, limiting demand and resulting in only 252 examples being built between 1956 and 1959. While the model was a commercial disappointment at the time, it has since become one of the most collectible and valuable BMWs ever produced.
The 507's exclusivity attracted numerous celebrity owners, most famously Elvis Presley during his military service in Germany. Today, surviving examples regularly command seven-figure prices at auction and are widely regarded as among the most beautiful sports cars of the 1950s.
