Winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans was more than a corporate directive for Renault in the late 1970s...it was a matter of national pride. After three years of development - and disappointment - Renault finally made good on the promise of their sports prototype program in 1978, when the bubble-roofed A442B of Didier Pironi and Jean-Pierre Jassaud outlasted the era's dominant Porsche 936s and 935/78s to take the overall Le Mans win, establishing the yellow-and-white Elf-liveried Renault as one of history's most iconic sports racers.
