When Porsche and their factory-backed John Wyer Racing team arrived at Sebring in 1971, they stood alone at the top of the endurance racing pecking order. Fresh off a victory in the Daytona 24 Hours, and with a stable of drivers that included Pedro Rodriguez, Jo Siffert, Derek Bell and Jackie Oliver, the Gulf-Wyer 917Ks were the odds-on favorite to win the grueling twelve-hour race. But in motorsport, as in life, nothing is ever certain. Facing unexpectedly strong competition from Penske's Ferrari 512, the Autodelta-entered Alfa Romeo Tipo 33s, and family rival Porsche Salzburg in their Martini-sponsored 917, the Gulf 917Ks would find themselves in an epic struggle for survival. The #1 917, driven by Siffert and Bell, would run out of fuel on course and would be handed a four-lap penalty for illegal refueling, while the #2 Rodriguez/Oliver car would be involved in a controversial crash with the Penske Ferrari, resulting in major body damage and substantial time lost in the pits. Yet despite these setbacks, the Gulf-Wyer Porsches would soldier on to claim fourth and fifth place at Sebring, further proving the 917's dominance over international endurance racing.

New from Spark Models is a pair of exceptionally detailed, limited edition 1:43-scale resin replicas of the Gulf-Wyer Porsche 917Ks that fought through adversity to claim top-five finishes at Sebring in 1971. Resplendent in iconic Gulf Blue livery, each model crackles with authenticity, with accurately rendered bodywork, realistic Firestone tires, and delicate trim and mechanical components. Limited to only 500 units of each car, collectors of high-quality 1:43-scale racing Porsches are advised to act quickly to add these desirable Gulf 917Ks by Spark to their collections.
