WHAT MAKES THE CHEVROLET DEKON MONZA SO SPECIAL?
Seeing the compact Chevrolet Monza as the ideal foundation for a silhouette racer in IMSA's new All American GT category, race car fabricator Lee Dykstra and Horst Kwech's DeKon Engineering worked in partnership with General Motors to build a lightweight, tube-frame racer powered by the tried and true small-block Chevy V8. The resulting DeKon Monza quickly proved itself to be more than a match for the dominant Porsches and ascendant BMWs of the day. In the skillful hands of Al Holbert, the Monza would score back-to-back IMSA Camel GT championships in 1976 and 1977, proving that even in the depths of the malaise era, American muscle could still get the job done.
