WHAT MAKES THE PORSCHE 935 (1977 DAYTONA 24 HOURS) SO SPECIAL?
The Porsche 935 is almost inarguably the most significant production-based race car of the 1970s, if not of all time. Nearly singlehandedly, it set the template for the rules-stretching, wide-flared "silhouette" racers that would follow, as well as demonstrating the omnipotence of turbocharging technology. In the 1977 Daytona 24 Hours, the flachbau 935 of Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass would claim a dominant pole position and would be the clear favorite for victory, but a pair of off-track excursions would ultimately doom the car to DNF status. Nevertheless, the Martini-liveried 935 would become one of the most recognizable race cars of its era.
