Historical Background: The Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic
Few automobiles occupy the same mythical status as the Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic. Designed by Jean Bugatti, son of company founder Ettore Bugatti, the Atlantic emerged during the mid-1930s as an audacious blend of aviation-inspired engineering and Art Deco styling. Its dramatic teardrop silhouette, riveted dorsal seam, low roofline, and flowing fenders created a shape unlike anything else on the road.
The Atlantic evolved from the radical Bugatti Aérolithe concept car of 1935. Because the lightweight magnesium alloy originally intended for the body could not be welded using contemporary techniques, the design featured prominent external riveted seams. While "production" Atlantics ultimately used aluminum body panels, Jean Bugatti retained the signature spine running from the hood to the tail, creating one of the most recognizable automotive styling elements ever conceived.
The "SC" designation stood for Surbaissé ("lowered") and Compresseur ("supercharged"), identifying the most desirable and highest-performance version of the Type 57. Equipped with a supercharged 3.3-liter straight-eight engine and a lowered chassis, the Type 57SC could exceed 120 mph (193 km/h)—an astonishing figure for the era. Its combination of speed, luxury, exclusivity, and advanced engineering has led many historians to regard it as one of the world's first true supercars.
Only four Type 57SC Atlantics were ever built, and only two are known to survive. Today, the Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic is widely regarded as one of the greatest automobiles ever created—a masterpiece that transcends transportation to become a work of rolling art.
